Introduction: The Mouse Enters the Hobby
When Ravensburger announced Disney Lorcana in 2023, the TCG world paid attention. Disney — the most powerful entertainment brand on the planet — was entering the trading card game market. The question wasn't whether it would sell. The question was whether it would be any good.
The answer, it turned out, was yes. Disney Lorcana launched to extraordinary demand, sold out globally within hours of release, and established itself as a genuine fourth pillar of the TCG hobby alongside Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and One Piece. This is how it happened.
The Origins: Ravensburger and the Disney Partnership
Disney Lorcana was developed by Ravensburger — a German games company with over 130 years of history, best known for puzzles and family board games. The partnership with Disney was announced at D23 Expo in September 2022, with a planned release in 2023.
The game was designed by Ryan Miller and Steve Warner, both veterans of the TCG industry with experience at Wizards of the Coast. From the beginning, the design philosophy was clear: Lorcana would be accessible enough for casual Disney fans and deep enough for competitive TCG players.
The name — Lorcana — comes from the fictional world the game is set in: the Great Illuminary, a magical realm where Illumineers (the players) summon glimmers of Disney characters using magical ink. It's a clever framing that allows any Disney character from any era to appear in the same game without breaking internal logic.
The Launch: August 2023
Disney Lorcana's first set, The First Chapter, launched at Gen Con in August 2023 before a wider retail release in September. The response was unprecedented for a new TCG.
Stores sold out within minutes. Secondary market prices for booster boxes tripled overnight. The Elsa — Spirit of Winter card, a rare foil featuring Frozen's Elsa, was selling for hundreds of pounds within days of release. Scalpers descended on retail locations across the US, UK, and Europe.
Ravensburger, to their credit, responded quickly — increasing print runs and committing to keeping the game in print. But the launch chaos established something important: Disney Lorcana had an audience far beyond the traditional TCG community. Parents, Disney fans, casual collectors, and gift buyers were all reaching for it.
The Sets: A Timeline
- The First Chapter (2023) — The debut set. 204 cards featuring characters from across Disney's history — Mickey Mouse, Elsa, Moana, Simba, Maleficent, and more. Established the core mechanics and introduced the Enchanted rarity tier.
- Rise of the Floodborn (2023) — The second set, introducing Floodborn characters — alternate versions of existing characters with new abilities and stunning alternate artwork. The Floodborn mechanic became one of the game's most beloved features.
- Into the Inklands (2024) — Expanded the roster with characters from Treasure Planet, The Great Mouse Detective, and other less-represented Disney properties. A fan favourite for its deep cuts.
- Ursula's Return (2024) — Villain-focused set with Ursula as the central antagonist. Some of the most dramatic card artwork in the game's history.
- Shimmering Skies (2024) — Aviation and sky-themed, featuring characters like Dumbo, Peter Pan, and Aladdin's Genie.
- Azurite Sea (2025) — Ocean-themed expansion with a focus on nautical Disney properties.
- Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 (2025–2026) — The most recent sets, continuing to expand the roster and introduce new mechanics.
How to Play: The Basics
Disney Lorcana is a two-player game. Each player builds a deck of exactly 60 cards using characters, items, actions, and songs from the Disney universe. The goal is to be the first player to collect 20 lore.
Card Types
- Character Cards: The core of every deck. Characters are played to your field and can quest for lore or challenge opposing characters. Each has a cost, strength, willpower, and lore value.
- Item Cards: Persistent cards that provide ongoing abilities or resources.
- Action Cards: One-time effects played from your hand.
- Song Cards: A special type of action that can be sung for free by a character with sufficient cost — one of Lorcana's most distinctive mechanics.
Ink — The Resource System
Resources in Lorcana are managed through Ink. Each turn, you may place one card from your hand into your inkwell face-down (if it has the inkwell symbol). Your inkwell grows by one each turn, and you spend ink to play cards. Most cards cost between 1 and 9 ink.
The Six Colours (Inks)
- Amber: Support and healing. Cinderella, Aurora, Rapunzel.
- Amethyst: Magic and trickery. Merlin, Ursula, the Fairy Godmother.
- Emerald: Cunning and deception. Robin Hood, Cruella De Vil, Scar.
- Ruby: Bravery and speed. Hercules, Mulan, Simba.
- Sapphire: Wisdom and knowledge. Belle, Genie, Elsa.
- Steel: Strength and force. Gaston, the Beast, Maui.
Decks can use a maximum of two ink colours, which creates meaningful deckbuilding decisions and distinct playstyle identities.
Questing and Challenging
On your turn, you can exert (turn sideways) your characters to either quest — gaining lore equal to their lore value — or challenge an opposing character. When challenging, both characters deal damage equal to their strength to each other. Characters with damage equal to or greater than their willpower are banished.
The first player to reach 20 lore wins.
The Rarity Tiers
Lorcana uses a distinctive rarity system:
- Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Legendary: Standard tiers found in booster packs
- Enchanted: The chase rarity — alternate art, foil treatment, and stunning visual presentation. One Enchanted card appears approximately every two booster boxes. These are the cards collectors most desire.
Enchanted versions of popular characters — particularly Elsa, Mickey Mouse, and Maleficent — have commanded significant prices on the secondary market since launch.
Why Collectors Love It
Disney Lorcana has a unique position in the hobby: it appeals simultaneously to hardcore TCG players and to people who have never bought a trading card in their life.
For Disney fans, the cards are beautiful objects in their own right. The artwork — particularly the Enchanted cards — is genuinely stunning, and the characters span the entire Disney catalogue from Snow White to Moana. Many collectors display their favourite cards framed, independent of any gameplay.
For TCG veterans, the game offers genuine strategic depth. The two-colour deckbuilding constraint, the song mechanic, and the lore-racing win condition create a distinct gameplay identity that rewards skill and preparation.
For investors, Enchanted cards from early sets have held value well, and the game's broad appeal suggests a long print run and sustained demand.
Getting Started
The easiest entry point is a Starter Deck — 60 cards, ready to play, built around a specific ink colour combination. Ravensburger releases Starter Decks with most sets.
For collectors, booster boxes offer the best odds at Enchanted cards. The secondary market for singles is well-developed, so you can also target specific characters directly.
