RiftBound: League of Legends TCG — Is It Worth Getting Into?

League of Legends Enters the Card Game Arena

League of Legends is one of the most played video games in the world — over 150 million registered accounts, a professional esports scene that fills stadiums, and a cultural footprint that extends far beyond gaming. So when Riot Games announced RiftBound, their official League of Legends trading card game, the hobby paid attention.

RiftBound launched to significant fanfare, bringing iconic champions like Jinx, Yasuo, Ahri, and Thresh to the tabletop for the first time in a dedicated card game format. But is it actually worth getting into? We've dug into the gameplay, the product, and the collector potential to give you a straight answer.

What Is RiftBound?

RiftBound is the official League of Legends trading card game, developed by Riot Games in partnership with a dedicated card game studio. It's built around the champions, items, and locations of the League of Legends universe — the same world that also underpins Legends of Runeterra (Riot's digital card game) and the Arcane Netflix series.

The game launched with the Unleashed booster set, which serves as the foundation of the card pool and introduces the core mechanics. Additional sets are planned on a regular release schedule.

How Does It Play?

RiftBound is a two-player competitive card game. Each player builds a deck around a Champion — a legendary card representing one of League of Legends' iconic characters. The goal is to reduce your opponent's Nexus health to zero — a direct reference to the game's win condition in League of Legends itself.

Core Mechanics

  • Champions: Each deck is built around a Champion card that levels up during the game — gaining new abilities as specific conditions are met. This levelling mechanic directly mirrors League of Legends' in-game progression and gives RiftBound a distinctive identity.
  • Mana: Resources are managed through a mana system that grows each round, similar to Legends of Runeterra. You gain one mana per round up to a maximum, and unspent mana carries over (up to a limit) — rewarding patient, strategic play.
  • Units and Spells: Standard card types — units attack and defend, spells provide one-time effects. The interaction between units and spells creates the tactical depth of the game.
  • The Rift: A shared board zone that both players contest — controlling the Rift provides ongoing advantages, creating a push-and-pull dynamic that feels distinctly League of Legends.

The Champion Levelling System

The standout mechanic. Each Champion starts in their base form and levels up when specific conditions are met — for example, Jinx levels up after you've played enough cheap cards in a turn, reflecting her in-game personality of going increasingly unhinged as the game progresses. Levelled-up Champions have significantly stronger abilities and change the game state dramatically.

This system gives RiftBound a narrative quality that most TCGs lack — you're not just playing cards, you're telling the story of your Champion's game.

The Unleashed Set: What's in It?

The Unleashed booster set launches the game with a substantial card pool covering multiple regions of Runeterra:

  • Demacia: Order, justice, and powerful units. Garen, Lux, Fiora.
  • Noxus: Aggression and overwhelming force. Darius, Draven, Katarina.
  • Piltover & Zaun: Technology and chaos. Jinx, Vi, Jayce, Heimerdinger.
  • Freljord: Endurance and control. Ashe, Sejuani, Braum.
  • Ionia: Balance and spirituality. Yasuo, Ahri, Lee Sin.
  • Shadow Isles: Death and the undead. Thresh, Hecarim, Kalista.

Each region has a distinct playstyle that maps to its League of Legends identity, making deck selection feel meaningful for fans of the game.

The Collector Appeal

RiftBound has been designed with collectors in mind from the ground up. The card treatments are exceptional:

  • Champion Rares: Full-art Champion cards with cinematic illustrations
  • Prestige Cards: The chase rarity — alternate art treatments with premium foil and holographic effects, featuring iconic champion skins from the video game
  • Arcane Series: Special cards featuring artwork from the Arcane Netflix series, with a distinct painted aesthetic that's drawn significant collector interest

The Arcane series cards in particular have crossover appeal beyond the TCG hobby — fans of the show who've never bought a trading card are seeking them out as collectibles.

Is It Worth Getting Into?

Here's our honest assessment:

For League of Legends fans: Absolutely yes. If you play League of Legends or watched Arcane, RiftBound is a natural extension of that passion. The champion levelling system, the regional identities, and the Arcane artwork make this feel like a genuine love letter to the franchise. You'll recognise everything and enjoy the game on a level that non-LoL players won't.

For TCG veterans: Cautiously yes. The gameplay is genuinely well-designed — the mana system and champion levelling create interesting decisions. Whether it achieves the competitive depth of Magic or the collector frenzy of Pokémon remains to be seen, but the foundation is solid.

For collectors: Watch this space. The Arcane series cards and Prestige treatments are visually stunning and have crossover appeal. If RiftBound builds a sustained player base — which Riot's marketing muscle makes likely — early set cards could appreciate significantly. The Unleashed booster box is a reasonable early investment.

For investors: Higher risk, higher potential reward. New TCGs are always a gamble. But RiftBound has something most new TCGs don't: one of the world's largest gaming communities already invested in the IP. If any new TCG has the potential to break through, it's this one.

The Bottom Line

RiftBound is one of the most promising new TCG launches in years. The IP is enormous, the gameplay is thoughtful, and the card treatments are genuinely impressive. It's not a guaranteed success — no new TCG is — but it has more going for it than almost any competitor.

If you're a League of Legends fan, buy in now. If you're a TCG collector looking for the next big thing, RiftBound deserves serious attention.
